also referring to my last response below this, messing around with a colour pallete beforehand is SO helpful. i always find the hardest part of making a skin being the skin colour i use as the base, get an idea of the colours youll be using and try to maybe, depending on your style, have 3 to 5 distinct colours that are repeated over, my beautiful friend shig's skins tend to have repeated colour codes and it looks great, ive been working on trying to repeat colours aswell. i usually make my pony pure black and pick a skin tone on the face and shade that first ^_^

HELLO? little old me 🥹? i am not the best with colour theory but something to keep in mind with colouring is the place on the colour wheel, to shade you should move the colour wheel to the more saturated (?) version of your colour - for red, youd move to a more purple colour, for blue you'd move to purple aswell, for yellow you'd probably do orange, etc etc! it does depend ony our style, but thats what i do. you obviously want a darker version of your base colour and the way you move your colour wheel makes a big impact. looking at pre determined colour palletes for atleast a general idea before hand is a good idea. having a structure rather than going in blind! ive played the game for awhile so it comes naturally over time but i would say to look at fanart, ponys that inspire you, things like that. dont rip right from the source, but you can use things like that to learn. it truly does depend on your style as i usually make ponys bright, so if you want better advice i would honestly go about learning from an artists perspective even if youre not one. go on youtube and find good and well regarded tip and teaching videos on the subject :-D thankyou for your question + compliment!
